Catalogued patent works / 1931—present

Machines
never built.

Ambrose Engineering preserves the credible futures of mechanisms: the filed, the shelved, and the beautifully impossible.

The premise

A drawing can be a finished object.

We preserve the moment after an engineer solved the hard part, and before a board, a budget, or a war made the work disappear.

FOUNDED
1931, Newcastle upon Tyne
HOLDINGS
216 patent sheets, 41 working models, 9 sealed notebooks
FOCUS
Marine drive, municipal machinery, domestic automation
CONDITION
Meticulously specified; gloriously untested

The draughting room

From the flat files

A-017

The Rowan Indexer

A brass-and-ebonite address machine that found a house by the pressure of a postman’s thumb.

Prototype: 1:4
M-042

Gannet Tidal Ratchet

A bidirectional sea gate drive designed to turn slack water into a useful, patient torque.

Sheet set: complete
C-088

Harrow Weather Organ

Barometric bellows that changed a factory’s whistle schedule before rain could reach the yard.

Build: cancelled
D-113

Sunday Lift Cabinet

An apartment dumbwaiter with an elected mechanical conscience: it refused to run on Sundays.

Patent: expired
03 / MARGINALIA

The evidence table

The note that
changes the drawing.

Lay a recovered mark under raking light. The red layer is a reading, never a repair.

A technical drawing detail viewed through an annotation scanner Select a marginal note and use the raking-light control to reveal its red trace over the cyan engineering drawing.

STAGES

How a phantom
becomes legible

A record, not a revival

Every decision stays traceable to the sheet: no romantic repair, no implied certainty.

01

Listen

We begin with the marginalia: what the inventor crossed out, underlined, or circled three times.

02

Measure

Dimensions are reconciled against surviving fasteners, stains, and the habits of the original hand.

03

Redraw

Every line is recut at its original scale so a mechanism can be understood without being repaired.

04

Release

New sheets enter the archive with their contradictions intact, ready for a curious pair of hands.
