01 / incoming transmission

A night-shift report, transmitted slowly.

At 02:17, a colony of Nanomia bijuga passed the south glass in a loose blue helix. No alarm, no pulse pattern we could name—just living modules holding formation in pressure that would fold our vessel like foil.

We did not follow. Observation begins with learning when to stay still.

02 / tonight's watch

Three lights worth staying awake for.

Every sighting starts as an event in the dark, then becomes a timecode, a sketch, and a question for the next descent.

Glass squid—one clean vanishing act.

A palm-sized Taonius slipped beneath the starboard lamp, switched its body to ink-black, then blinked twice from inside.

Siphonophore wake along the southern ridge.

Forty-one minutes of slow, braided movement. The colony maintained a spacing we have not seen in open water.

Copepod bloom in the ballast shadow.

Pinpoint cyan flashes gathered around an old mooring line, brightening only when the current turned east.

We measure light without asking for more of it.

Most deep-sea animals do not need our help to glow. Station 12 uses red-safe navigation, hydrophones, and an ultra-sensitive photon counter, leaving the water as close to itself as we can.

Tune the dark

Two narrow bands are keeping watch.

Slide through the counter’s window. Most of the water is quiet; two small returns resolve only when the dial meets their emission.

The spectrum display is unavailable. The manual record remains readable; 470 nm and 495 nm are the logged returns.
