NULLPORT began in 1982 with a flooded insurance archive, a borrowed DEC terminal, and four reels of tape no one else would touch. The figures on those reels settled pensions for 143 dock workers. We kept the name because a null port is where a system sends what it cannot afford to lose.
Our room above the old harbour radio exchange is still cold, still dry, and still full of machines that remember the tempo of eight-inch floppies, QIC cartridges, 9-track tape, and early hard disks. We do not “extract data.” We establish provenance, rebuild context, and leave a trail that another careful person can follow.
Names and addresses are withheld where a file still has consequences. Dates, media, and methods are not.

We photograph the object before it is powered, note every label and smell, and read the least invasive copy first. Recovery is not a race against a progress bar. It is a sequence of decisions that needs to survive scrutiny.
Humidity, mould, oxide shed, broken leaders, and improvised labels are documented before a drive sees the media.
We make a raw image with checksums and retain every read error rather than smoothing it away.
File structures, application versions, printouts, and witness notes help distinguish a missing byte from a meaningful blank.
Owners receive the image, readable derivatives, a recovery log, and an honest account of what remains uncertain.
